How to Change Knobs, Pulls and Door Handles - A Quick Guide

  • 3 min reading time

Changing knobs and door handles can be a simple DIY task that instantly refreshes the look of your doors or cabinets. Here’s a quick guide to help you through the process:

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Screwdriver (usually Phillips or flathead, depending on the screws)
  • Measuring tape (optional)
  • New knob or door handle set
  • Pencil (optional)

Steps to Change a Door Handle:

Remove the Old Handle
  • Locate the Screws: Open the door to access the screws on the inner side of the door handle.
  • Unscrew the Handle: Use a screwdriver to remove the screws. Hold the handle as you remove the screws to prevent it from falling.
  • Remove the Handle and Backplate: Once the screws are removed, gently pull the handle off. The backplate (if present) may also come off.
  • Take Out the Latch: With the handle removed, you’ll see the latch mechanism. Remove the screws holding the latch in place, and slide it out of the door.
Install the New Handle:
  • Insert the New Latch: Slide the new latch into the hole where the old one was. Make sure it’s oriented correctly with the slant facing the door strike (the plate on the door frame).
  • Attach the Backplate: If your new handle has a backplate, align it with the holes and screw it in place.
  • Install the New Handle: Align the new handle with the latch and backplate. Hold it in place as you insert and tighten the screws.
  • Test the Handle: Before closing the door, test the handle to ensure it operates smoothly.

Steps to Change a Cabinet Knob or Pull:

Remove the Old Knob or Pull:

  • Locate the Screw: Open the cabinet door or drawer to find the screw securing the knob or pull.
  • Unscrew the Knob or Pull: Use a screwdriver to remove the screw. Hold the knob or pull as you remove the screw to avoid dropping it.
Install the New Knob or Pull:
  • Position the New Knob/Pull: Insert the screw through the inside of the cabinet door or drawer.
  • Secure the New Knob/Pull: Hold the new knob or pull in place on the outside while you screw it in from the inside.
  • Tighten the Screw: Ensure the screw is snug, but be careful not to overtighten as it could damage the cabinet.
Tips:
  • Measure Before You Buy: If you’re replacing a pull, measure the distance between the screw holes to ensure the new pull will fit.
  • Consider a Template: For a consistent look, especially with multiple cabinets, use a template to align the knobs or pulls.

This process is straightforward and can be completed in just a few minutes per knob or handle. Enjoy your refreshed doors and cabinets!
